Pakistan has reportedly become a new marriage market for Chinese men seeking brides, as stories have emerged about hundreds of women and girls from the South Asian nation’s impoverished Christian minority being lured away from their families and trafficked to China.
Brokers are reportedly being helped by Christian clerics who are paid to look for Pakistani brides for Chinese men. Parents of girls are also reportedly paid thousands of dollars and promised that their children will be wed to wealthy Chinese who are Christian converts.
But some families say they never received money from the brokers, and there are reports that girls were abused by their foreign husbands.
The Chinese government is also under fire for unquestioningly issuing visas for the girls.
China’s demand for foreign brides is linked to a gender imbalance caused by a one-child policy which the nation only recently scrapped. Brides have also been brought to China from other Asian countries, including Vietnam, Laos and North Korea.
